What Buddhism Can Teach Us About Our Inner Fears—and How to Overcome Them

Fear, self-doubt, anger, craving, and distraction can sometimes feel like monsters within our own minds. In Buddhist teachings, these inner obstacles are often represented by Māra—the forces and habitual patterns that create suffering and prevent us from recognizing our natural wisdom and compassion.

Drawing from her recent translation of Patrul Rinpoche’s teachings on the Māras, Dr. Ujeed will explore how Buddhist wisdom can help us understand and work skillfully with these difficult experiences.

Through teaching, reflection, mind training, and meditation, participants will learn practical ways to:

  • Recognize the thoughts and habits that strengthen fear
  • Work with difficult emotions without suppressing or avoiding them
  • Meet uncertainty with greater awareness and courage
  • Cultivate compassion for ourselves and others
  • Bring these teachings into relationships and everyday life

Rather than treating our inner fears as enemies, Buddhist practice invites us to turn toward them with curiosity and awareness. When we understand what gives these “monsters” their power, they can become opportunities for insight, healing, and transformation.

This talk and workshop is open to experienced Buddhist practitioners, secular meditators, beginners, and anyone interested in understanding the mind. No previous meditation experience is required.
