On May 21, 2026, members of Karuna Buddhist Center and the center’s board gathered for the Annual Membership Meeting to reflect on a year of growth, service, and community connection. To read the minutes of the general membership and board meetings, click here.
The meeting included several board updates. Leslie Rutkowski joined the board as Secretary, while longtime Secretary William Yeshe Soergel transitioned into a Director role and we thanked Matt Willis for four years of dedicated board service. The rest of the board remains unchanged with Khenpo Tshering Chophel as Spiritual Director, Lama Nancy Burks as President, Joe Myers as Treasurer, and Jack Huynh as Director.
Treasurer Joe Myers reported that Karuna’s financial position remains stable and has modestly improved thanks to increased retreat attendance, donations, and membership support. The April retreat was the largest in the center’s history, with more than 20 participants attending.
We also discussed the growing need for a larger space as attendance continues to increase beyond the center’s current 573-square-foot location. A new committee is forming to explore future options and coordinate volunteer efforts, and Alisa Dowell has graciously volunteered. To volunteer alongside Alisa, please contact her or a board member.
Volunteers were recognized as the heart of the community, helping with retreats, shrine care, hospitality, and special events. Karuna also continues to expand partnerships with Ann Arbor Karma Thegsum Chöling and Triple Crane Retreat Center through community service and shared programming. We are actively exploring ways to increase our volunteer efforts, both at the center and in our community.
Thank you to everyone whose generosity and effort continue to support Karuna’s flourishing community!
