SUMMARY:Karuna Journey\, Level 1: Finding stillness and clarity
DESCRIPTION:Meditation is fundamental to any spiritual path\, and calm-abiding meditation (shamatha) is elementary for all Buddhist paths. Focused on the first three of nine stages\, this program teaches new meditators the fundamentals: how to focus their mind on a single object\, what we mean by attention and awareness in meditation\, and how to troubleshoot distraction and dullness when we meditate. Students will have access to Karuna Buddhist Center’s diverse community of experienced meditators\, trained Buddhist teachers\, and students’ mutual reflection on what we experience when we meditate. \nSuitable for beginners or even those with a regular practice. Practitioners of other meditation styles can benefit from this course by understanding the nuances of the stages to deepen their practice. \nStages of Calm-Abiding Meditation taught in Karuna Journey (level 1):\n1. Placing the Mind\n2. Continuous Placement\n3. Repeated Placement \nTuesday evenings 7-8:15 pm\, June 11\, 18 & 25\, July 2\, 9\, 16 & 23. We encourage students to attend at least a few of these sessions in person as the course will be more effective. We will offer the ability to attend the teachings online after the first session. We welcome newcomers to this course at any time. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n Name\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Registration options(Required)\n \n \n Free\n \n \n \n Donation\n \n \n \n Sponsorship\n We provide three registration options for our program: Free\, available to anyone who can't afford to contribute; Donation\, available for both members and non-members; and Sponsorship\, a choice that supports our teachers and contributes to scholarships for those who cannot afford teachings. SUMMARY:Saga Dawa Duchen Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Karuna Buddhist Center will celebrate Saga Dawa Duchen (also known as Vesak) on Friday May 24th this year. It is one of the holiest days of the Buddhist calendar\, commemorating the Buddha’s birth\, enlightenment\, and death. This entire lunar month\, known as Saga Dawa\, is considered an auspicious time to practice the dharma and abstain from negativities\, and the “Duchen” or “Great Occasion” occurs on the Full Moon day of the month. \nThis year\, Karuna will start its Saga Dawa/Vesak traditions at 11am by holding a worship service dedicated to Shakyamuni Buddha\, the Buddha of this fortunate age who is also known as Siddhartha. A special statue of baby Siddhartha will be placed before the altar\, and we invite participants to “bathe” the Buddha as part of the ceremony. \nAfter the service\, all are invited to lunch at a local restaurant\, the newly reopened Madras Masala. \nThen from 3-5pm we will have a prayer service dedicated to the forefathers of our lineage\, the Kagyu mahasiddhas (“great yogis”)\, which will evoke the blessings of our thousand-year-old lineage and its founders: Marpa the Translator\, Milarepa the Yogin\, and Gampopa the Kadampa Monk. This will include a tsok (food blessing) in which we will all share some sacred finger foods.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness Unleashed: Transforming Difficult Emotions through Mind Training
DESCRIPTION:Lojong\, or “Mind Training\,” is a Buddhist system of powerful\, sometimes paradoxical\, methods through which we can transform anger\, attachment and confusion into compassion\, generosity and wisdom—the qualities of an enlightened mind. Centuries old\, it is nonetheless easy to apply to the daily situations of our modern lives\, and is highly suitable as a secular path for those interested in bringing greater meaning and happiness to their lives and relationships.\n\nThe course will be taught twice a month on Zoom for seven sessions to cover the seven steps of mind training. In each session\, teacher Khenpo Tshering Chophel will explain one of the steps\, and provide time for questions and contemplation of the teachings. Between sessions\, students will be asked to practice what they have learned. Khenpo Chophel and other teachers will be available for individual discussion in between classes if desired. \n\n\nFebruary 13: Preliminaries to Support your practice\nFebruary 27: Training in Enlightened Mind\nMarch 12: Transforming Adversity into Enlightenment\nMarch 26: Applying your Practice in Daily Life\nApril 9: Evaluating your Mind Training\nApril 23: How to Commit to your Path\nMay 14: Going Forth with Mind Training\n\n\nLearning objectives\nOver the 14 week course\, you will study two classic texts on Mind Training  by Chekawa Yeshe Dorje and Jamgön Kongtrul and learn specific psychological techniques for training your mind to develop greater compassion for yourself and others. You will practice applying these approaches to daily life challenges\, aided by one-on-one coaching if desired. By the end of the course\, you will have incorporated this practice into your everyday life as a life-long training. \n\n\n\nClass Registration\nJoin this zoom only class at any time and donate to have access to previous classes. \n\n \n \n \n \n Name\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Registration options(Required)\n \n \n Free\n \n \n \n Donation\n \n \n \n Sponsorship\n We provide three registration options for our program: Free\, available to anyone who can't afford to contribute; Donation\, available for both members and non-members; and Sponsorship\, a choice that supports our teachers and contributes to scholarships for those who cannot afford teachings.
SUMMARY:Songs of Realization
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we sing and contemplate songs of the masters together. Buddhist teachings and spiritual experiences are often communicated through songs\, such as those famously sung by the great Tibetan yogi\, Milarepa. Following the teachings of Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche\, we will sing in English\, without judgment of “good” and “bad” as we try to move beyond an intellectual approach to the Dharma. As Khenpo Rinpoche sums up\, “Know this life to be like a dream\, See the mind’s unborn nature\, Aspire to be of benefit to others.” \n\n \n \n Zoom Information Request\n We encourage everyone to attend in person teachings but can make most teachings available via zoom by request.
SUMMARY:No Judgment Zone With Lama Nancy and Khenpo Chophel
DESCRIPTION:No Judgment Zone is a support group with a difference: not a therapy group\, a 12-step program\, or a religious meeting\, it is an opportunity to talk and listen while striving for full acceptance of ourselves and each other. We take turns sharing whatever we wish while helping each other tune into our habitual tendencies to judge–whether with approval or criticism–virtually everything from people’s appearance to their innermost thoughts. \nOur attachment to our own opinions can create great suffering for ourselves and others. Bringing “unconditional positive regard” (a term coined by the humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers) to our relationships fosters mutual respect\, compassion for our human imperfections\, and freedom from the feelings of judging and being judged. It doesn’t mean that everything we do is fine; instead\, it involves basic respect for each other based on acceptance of who we truly are–the good\, the bad\, and the ugly. \nWe often start with whole-group sharing and discussion\, then break into smaller groups to improve awareness of our critical reactions in both the speaker and listener roles. \nNo Judgment Zone is open to everyone age 18 and over\, regardless of religious background or preference\, or lack thereof. By attending the group\, we agree to hold everything shared as confidential.

\n\n\n\nClass Registration \n\n \n \n \n \n Name\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Registration options(Required)\n \n \n Free\n \n \n \n Donation\n \n \n \n Sponsorship\n We provide three registration options for our program: Free\, available to anyone who can't afford to contribute; Donation\, available for both members and non-members; and Sponsorship\, a choice that supports our teachers and contributes to scholarships for those who cannot afford teachings.
SUMMARY:Open House
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendar! On Saturday\, February 10\, 2024\, from noon-2pm\, we are inviting everyone to join us in welcoming the Lunar New Year at the Karuna Buddhist Center. Our center\, located at 423 S. 4th Ave. in downtown Ann Arbor\, is a peaceful sanctuary amid the bustle of daily life. \nThis Lunar New Year\, we have much to celebrate: Our spiritual teacher\, Ven. Khenpo Tshering Chophel\, moved to Ann Arbor permanently in 2023 to serve as full-time clergy for Karuna Buddhist Center. This Open House is our first opportunity to introduce him to the general public. Khenpo Chophel’s spiritual guidance and teachings have been instrumental in the development of our center and now that he is here in person\, we look forward to his leadership during our next chapter. \nThe festivities will begin with prayers for auspiciousness and prosperity in the Dragon Year. Visitors will have the opportunity to offer prayer lamps and receiving blessings from Khenpo Chophel. This is a great opportunity to meet our members and learn about the center and our ongoing programs. Beverages and snacks will be provided. We look forward to welcoming you to our Lunar New Year Open House at Karuna Buddhist Center! \nRSVP\nFeel free to RSVP to help us plan for the event.\n\n \n \n \n \n Name\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Number of peopleDonation\n \n This event is free\, but donations are always welcome.Total\n \n Payment MethodPayPal CheckoutCredit Card\n MasterCardVisaSupported Credit Cards: MasterCard\, Visa\n \n Card Number\n \n \n \n Expiration Date\n \n \n                                                 \n Security Code\n \n \n \n Cardholder Name\n Mailing List\n \n Add me to mailing list.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ \n \n \nMake Online Lamp Offering\n\n \n \n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Number of candles Quantity(Required)\n \n \n Price:\n $1.00\n \n \n Quantity \n Total\n \n Payment MethodPayPal CheckoutCredit Card\n MasterCardVisaSupported Credit Cards: MasterCard\, Visa\n \n Card Number\n \n \n \n Expiration Date\n \n \n                                                 \n Security Code\n \n \n \n Cardholder Name\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:New To Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:Khenpo Chophel’s current teaching provides a new slant on the Four Noble Truths. While this introductory series is accessible to newcomers\, more advanced students will definitely learn something new. And no question is too basic to ask during the discussion period. \n\n \n \n Zoom Information Request\n We encourage everyone to attend in person teachings but can make most teachings available via zoom by request.
