Nondiscrimination Policy

Inclusivity
Inclusivity is at the heart of our sangha. We invite you to come as you are and we welcome all to join us in fellowship. We understand that much suffering is caused by prejudices based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, political beliefs, disability, or any other belief or identity. In light of this understanding, we strive for nonjudgmental acceptance of all. Part of our Buddhist practice is to offer respect and harmony in order to foster awakening in ourselves and others.

Nondiscrimination
Karuna Buddhist Center strictly prohibits discrimination of any kind. Our Board affirms that there are no barriers blocking anyone from serving at any level in the organization or participating in any function because of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual preference, disability, or other personal characteristics.

We are sensitive to the fact that many Buddhist centers in the United States lack diversity, and we welcome suggestions as to how we might make our programs more relevant to underrepresented communities and groups.

Lama Nancy Burks has previously consecrated the marriage of LGBTQ+ people and is happy to perform a marriage ceremony for any couple, regardless of gender identity or sexual preference.

Anti-Harassment
Karuna Buddhist Center does not tolerate any form of harassment. This includes, but is not limited to, derogatory or condescending comments, unwanted sexual advances or touching, physical threats or assault, outbursts of anger, destruction of property, and online harassment.

You can find the center’s policy on sexual harassment here.
